ABOUT

The fourth issue of Shooting Gameside, published by Micro Magazine in 2012, and one of the most important documents in the series. Its lead feature unpicks the history of Toaplan, the Osaka studio behind Tiger-Heli, Truxton and Batsugun that laid the foundations of the modern shooting game before collapsing in 1994, seeding Cave, Raizing and others. The feature is anchored by interviews with two Toaplan veterans, composer and programmer Tatsuya Uemura and composer Masahiro Yuge; both interviews were later translated into English by shmuplations.com, an indication of how often this issue is cited.

Around the Toaplan material sit coverage of Valhellio, the iOS version of Mushihimesama and PixelJunk SideScroller, plus a classic-game feature on Steel Empire. The music pages report on a public lecture by Yuriko Keino, the early Namco composer of Xevious and Dig Dug, under the title The Pioneering Days of Game Music, and interview Koji Hayama. The doujin section covers RefRain ~prism memories~ and SATAZIUS. It runs to 159 pages.
