ABOUT

The opening volume of a four-part illustrated encyclopedia of shooting games published by Mediapal, released in December 2022. The series works chronologically, and this volume covers 1962 to 1983, taking the story back before the Space Invaders boom into territory most retro publications skip: the earliest video games, the vector-scan machines that flourished overseas, and the first wave of Japanese originals. More than 130 games are covered across 160 pages, each presented with screenshots.

The selection runs from the famous, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Moon Cresta, Sasuke vs. Commander and Xevius among them, to overseas machines such as Tank, Asteroids and Atari's Star Wars, and it follows the emergence of the scrolling shooter after Defender and Scramble ignited the form. PC and home console games of the period are included as well as arcade releases. For a player working backwards from modern shmups, this is the volume that explains where the grammar of the genre came from.

CONTENTS

  • Shooting games 1962-1983, more than 130 titles with screenshots
  • Pre-Space Invaders history of the genre
  • Vector-scan games: Asteroids, Star Wars, Tank
  • Space Invaders, Galaxian, Moon Cresta, Sasuke vs. Commander, Xevious
  • The rise of the scrolling shooter after Defender and Scramble
  • PC and home console shooters of the era

DESCRIPTION

The culmination of retro shooting-game books. It also examines the largely unrecorded history that preceded the Space Invaders boom. From the vector-scan titles that were popular overseas to the domestic games that developed along their own lines, more than 130 works are covered. Scrolling shooters, whose popularity was ignited by Defender and Scramble, are also covered at length, tracing how the games grew more sophisticated as the hardware advanced. Every game is described alongside screenshots. Space Invaders, Galaxian, Moon Cresta, Sasuke vs. Commander and Xevious are covered, as are overseas titles such as Tank, Asteroids and Star Wars. Shooting games for PCs and home consoles from 1962 to 1983 are included.
