ABOUT

Volume 9 of Old Gamers History, Hiroaki Sudo's retro gaming series from Mediapal, published in March 2016 at 161 pages. Subtitled the Golden Age, it covers 1987 to 1991, the five years the book calls the brightest in video game history, and the stretch in which the shooting game reached its commercial and creative peak.

The headline games are the big arcade titles of the period, Darius, Gradius II and R-Type among them, but the book pairs the famous works with oddities even enthusiasts have missed. Presented in 160 full-colour pages with screenshots and rare contemporary documents, it also follows the industry story around the games: the shockwaves that major announcements sent through the business, and the way new sub-genres were being established. With volumes 8 and 10 it forms a continuous three-part history of the genre from 1971 to 2005.

DESCRIPTION

The five years in which video games shone brightest, gathered in one volume. Darius, Gradius II and R-TYPE stand alongside the other big shooting-game titles. The changing history of video games is condensed into a single book: famous works everyone knows and oddities even enthusiasts have not heard of, recreating the genre's golden age. 160 full-colour pages with many screenshots and rare contemporary documents. This ninth volume centres on the peak years of the shooting game and the classics that defined them, showing how the industry reacted to major announcements and how new sub-genres were established.
