ABOUT

Volume 8 of Old Gamers History, a sixteen-part retro gaming series written by Hiroaki Sudo and published by Mediapal; volumes 8 to 10 are the shooting game instalments. This one, subtitled the Formative Period, covers 1971 to 1986 and appeared in October 2015 at 161 pages. Arriving after the series' well-received action game volumes, it opens the shooting chapter with what the publisher calls the star attraction of the game centre.

The coverage runs from the arcade classics that started the boom, Space Invaders and Xevious among them, through to hidden games known only to enthusiasts, and it crosses from the arcade to home hardware including the Famicom and Epoch's Cassette Vision. The book's angle is deliberately nostalgic, a history of the genre told for the generation that spent its youth chasing high scores, but the year-range and platform spread make it a workable reference for the genre's first fifteen years. It includes a bibliography and index.

DESCRIPTION

Space Invaders, Xevious and the other classics that swept the arcades return. A new chapter: after the well-received volume on action games comes one on the arcade's star attraction, the shooting game. From the major titles that defined the Showa era to hidden gems only enthusiasts know, coverage is complete, spanning arcade games and home systems from the Famicom to the Cassette Vision. It looks back over the history of the shooting game and sets out its appeal in full. The excitement of a boyhood spent chasing high scores, revived in the twenty-first century.
