Quartz
Quartz is a 1989 shoot 'em up for the Amiga and Atari ST built from two alternating section types. Odd-numbered sections are viewed from above and scroll in every direction, mixing standard attack waves with large coloured spheres that split on impact in the manner of Asteroids and release tokens; even-numbered sections scroll in a single direction while sending waves in from other angles. Nine tokens of one colour buy a power-up such as a weapon, a repair or a restart point, and up to three can be carried and triggered individually; unusually, running out of lives costs the player one power-up of their choosing rather than ending the game.
